Project Profile

The original heating system in the main school had reached the end of its life, with pipework that was corroded and breaking apart. This left the school without a functioning heating system and caused ongoing leaks beneath the floors. As the existing pipework was unrepairable and located below floor level, the decision was made to install a completely new system fed from the roof.

New HVAC units were introduced in place of traditional radiators. To accommodate this updated design, ceilings and lighting in some classrooms also required upgrading. Significant investment to ensure high quality and sustainability of the works was funded centrally through the Flying High Partnership, as well as from Edwalton Primary School who invested £18,000 into the project.

Project Experience

  • Stage 1 – heating upgrade involving radiator removal and preparation of roof works.
  • FIRST FIX INSTALLATION – ROOF WORKS – Big foot system put in place and used for support. Stainless press fit pipework used for install. Man-safe system used. Scaffold tower used for access/fenced off for restricted access.
  • ELECTRICAL STRIP OUT – Old lights removed and new lights were installed into suspended ceiling.
  • INTERNAL FIRST FIX – Stainless steel press-fit pipework and fittings were used for all main runs and radiator connections. After the PICVs, we used copper for all FCU connections. We used gripple wire to install FCUs as these were installed into the ceiling grid.
  • SECOND FIX RADIATORS AND FCU’S – FCU installed into grid, LST rad installed at high level in sensory room as asked for by the client.
  • FINAL FIX PIPEWORK AND INSULATION – Wall mounted controllers installed by BMS contractor PEEL. PIB insulation installed on all external pipework by MD Thermal.
  • PLANTROOM – We retained the existing boilers and primary pipework and installed new pipework from the plate heat exchanger.
  • MAIN HALL – Existing low-level heaters were retained and new units were installed at high level.
  • ELECTRICAL – The first fix was completed prior to the installation of the new ceilings. Power spurs were installed for the FCUs, located above the suspended ceiling. New lighting was also installed within the suspended ceiling.
  • NEW KITCHEN AREAS – We installed new kitchen units and worktops into 4 of the old classrooms. This gave the classrooms a well needed upgrade.
  • FINISHED CLASSROOMS – Oak year 1, Learning hub, Beach year 6, VO option in learning hub – we reverted from low level LST to a high level FCU. Additional works in this room will be suspended ceiling in half term.
